Scottish Marketing Directory – Community Guidelines

Last updated: 3 September 2026

The Scottish Marketing Directory exists to help businesses and marketers make useful, genuine professional connections.

We want SMD to remain a valuable professional community – not become another spam-filled prospecting database.

By using SMD, you agree to follow these Community Guidelines.

1. BE GENUINE

Profiles should represent real people and businesses.

Do not impersonate someone else, deliberately misrepresent your experience or create fake profiles.

Information about your experience, services, portfolio, qualifications and business should be accurate to the best of your knowledge.

2. BE PROFESSIONAL

Treat other members professionally and respectfully.

Harassment, intimidation, threats, hate speech, unlawful discrimination, abusive behaviour or inappropriate content are not welcome on SMD.

3. MAKE RELEVANT CONNECTIONS

You are encouraged to contact other members where there is a genuine professional reason to do so.

This might include discussing a potential project, enquiring about someone's services, exploring a collaboration or making another relevant business connection.

What is not acceptable is joining SMD simply to mass-pitch everyone in it.

4. DON'T SPAM MEMBERS

You must not:

  • send mass unsolicited messages;
  • scrape contact information;
  • automatically harvest profile data;
  • add SMD members to mailing lists without appropriate permission;
  • use automated systems to mass-contact members;
  • sell or distribute information collected from SMD; or
  • treat the Directory as a ready-made cold marketing database.

Someone choosing to display their email address does not automatically mean they have consented to receive your marketing emails.

5. RESPECT PEOPLE'S INFORMATION

Information within SMD is provided to help members make professional connections.

Do not collect, republish, sell, misuse or exploit another user's personal information.

6. ONLY UPLOAD CONTENT YOU CAN USE

Only upload photographs, logos, portfolio work, copy and other material that you own or have permission to use.

Do not upload content that infringes another person's copyright, trade mark, privacy or other rights.

7. DON'T ABUSE THE PLATFORM

Do not attempt to hack, disrupt, compromise, circumvent security controls or gain unauthorised access to SMD, its users or its underlying systems.

Do not introduce malware, malicious code, automated scraping tools or other technology intended to misuse the platform.

8. DO YOUR OWN DUE DILIGENCE

SMD does not vet every member or independently verify claims made on profiles.

An SMD profile or AI-generated match is not an endorsement.

Before hiring, engaging, paying or entering into an agreement with someone you discover through SMD, carry out whatever checks are appropriate for your business.

9. REPORT PROBLEMS

If you believe someone is abusing the platform or breaching these Guidelines, use the reporting functionality available within SMD.

Reports may be reviewed by the SMD team.

A report does not automatically result in another user's removal.

10. WE CAN REMOVE ACCESS

We reserve the right to remove content and restrict, suspend or terminate accounts where we reasonably believe these Guidelines or our Terms of Use have been breached, or where action is reasonably necessary to protect SMD or its community.

Serious abuse may result in immediate removal where appropriate.

11. THE SIMPLE VERSION

Use SMD to make great connections.

Be genuine. Be professional. Don't spam people. Don't scrape people's data. Don't misrepresent yourself. Don't make the platform worse for everyone else.

If you wouldn't be comfortable doing it in a room full of the Scottish Marketing community, don't do it here.
